Dublin
is renowned for its Georgian architecture and grand, eighteenth-century
decoration and The Merrion Hotel is a working, living example
of this bygone era. Created from four magnificent Grade I Listed
Georgian Townhouses and a specially commissioned contemporary
Garden Wing, The Merrion stands on Upper Merrion Street, located
in the heart of Dublin City. One of the houses, No. 24, was
the home of Lord Mornington. His son, the 1st Duke of Wellington,
is said to have been born there.
On the doorstep is Merrion Street, where the Irish Government
Buildings and National Gallery provide wonderful insight into
the nation's heritage and culture as do nearby Merrion and Fitzwilliam
Squares. A short walk leads to The Royal Hibernian Academy of
Art in Ely Place and the adjacent "golden mile" of
lively pubs, shops and restaurants dotted around St. Stephen's
Green. Grafton Street is a leisurely stroll away for all the
latest designer shops. During the week, The Merrion's location
is surrounded by commerce and industry - business people coming
to and from work as the city centre bustles with action. Weekends
in contrast are peaceful. Horse-drawn carriages clip-clop past
Georgian railings hung with the work of local exhibiting artists
while pedestrians amble towards town
